Research Enquiries

As with all archives, our records are incomplete and we have both strengths and weaknesses.

Whilst we do not hold the full army service records, we do hold the war diaries for each battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment during the Great War plus supporting official and unofficial documents, which often contain unique information on individuals. We also hold extensive enlistment information for soldiers of the 28th Foot between 1797-1881, and enlistment registers for the Gloucestershire Regiment in the first half of the twentieth century. These latter registers are highly variable in the amount of data they contain for any given individual.

Personal memoirs, diaries and letters exist from most periods, and we are of course strong on Regimental history, and uniform information.

We hold very little information about personnel in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars.

We can therefore often help in genealogical research, but there are sometimes limitations. If after a search of our archives, we find that we cannot help an inquirer, we will offer advice on the most fruitful alternative approaches available, if any.

In order to get the best value from our research, enquirers should add as much information as possible to the data entry panel below and try to be precise about regimental and battalion titles and numbers, the full names of persons and places, and dates.

Fees for research are levied on a not-for-profit basis and used to fund the conservation and maintenance of the museum and its archives. The charge for an initial enquiry is GBP17.50, payable in advance. This is based on one hour of research for relevant information and the preparation of a helpful and if possible informative response. If there is more information potentially available and therefore more time is needed, you will be told in advance. This may result in a quotation for additional work.
